Here is the ninth article of my series concerning famous Data Scientists. We will be focused on Data Scientist who turned Entrepreneur. Today we will talk about Andrew Yan-Tak Ng. From Stanford to Google to co-founding Coursera then Baidu.
So we will follow the following steps.
(1) Who is this Data Scientist?
(2) What is his work & Entrepreneur project are about?
(3) How can I benefit of such learning insights in my career path & theme selection?
Who is this Data Scientist?
Andrew Yan-Tak Ng is a Chinese American computer scientist. Being an artificial intelligence researcher, Ng includes in his early work an Autonomous Helicopter project, which developed one of the most capable autonomous helicopters in the world.
Chronologically, Ng was awarded a Sloan Fellowship (2007), before being named by MIT Technology Review TR35 as One of the top 35 innovators in the world under the age of 35 (2008). Later on, for his work in artificial intelligence, he is also a recipient of the Computers and Thought Award (2009).
What is his work about?
Initially working as a Professor at Stanford University in the data mining and machine learning fields, Ng shifted to Google (2012) while founding and contributing to the Google Brain Deep Learning Project. This same year (2012); he got entrepreneur and co-founded Coursera to offer free online courses for everyone. Later on, Ng became the chief scientist at Baidu leading Artificial Intelligence Group
Meanwhile, Ng is also the author or co-author of over 100 published papers dedicated to robotics, machine learning, , and related fields. Some of his work in computer vision has been featured in press releases and reviews.
25 millions learners | 149 universities | 2000+ courses | 180+ Specializations | 4 degrees.
Founding Coursera in 2012 with Daphne Koller, Ng wanted to share his knowledge and skills with the world. Thus, via Coursera, he published his courses online for anyone to take. This allowing him to teach more learners in a few months than he could have in an entire lifetime in the classroom. Since then, Coursera was upgraded into a platform where anyone, anywhere can learn and earn credentials from the world’s top universities and education providers.
How can I benefit of such learning insights in my career path & theme selection?
Ng is referred as a great Data Scientist for his initial contributions to artificial intelligence via his helicopter project. On the other hand, co-founding Coursera, is indeed phenomenal. Because building such a database via a business model allowing to share knowledge from top notch universities deserves a five star rating.
However, Ng belongs more to the Research Data Scientist rather than the entrepreneurs ones. Because, he is more inclined to generate insights via machine learning and artificial intelligence than being business orientated, he does not fit as a role model for me on my DoctoRoad.
